The Best Guide To Beginner Yoga In Ubud, Bali

Best Yoga and Retreats in Ubud, Bali

Here we share the best guide to yoga studios and retreats in Ubud, Bali, and what our experience has been getting into yoga as beginners.

Ubud, Bali: Yogi Paradise

Known as the cultural capital of Bali, Ubud is the perfect place to start off our lives here.

Located amongst ricefields and real Balinese culture, Ubud has a real sense of peace and unique beauty.

Before coming to Bali, Matt and I knew that we wanted to start incorporating a ‘daily practice’ into our lives.

But, with little experience in yoga, we weren’t sure how to fit in with all the yogis here in Ubud.

Luckily, within our first week here, we decided to check out The Yoga Barn and purchase a one-week unlimited class pass.

The Yoga Barn Bali

There are dozens of yoga studios to choose from in Ubud, but The Yoga Barn is by far the most well-known.

This extremely large yoga “resort” has seven different yoga spaces, a delicious and healthy restaurant, a spa/treatment room, guest accommodation (for retreats or yoga teacher training), and a juice bar.

Walking into The Yoga Barn is like entering a secret, and massive, oasis.

And one of the best parts – getting greeted by Joy, the sweetest Golden Retriever that lives there.

Located about 3 minutes from the Monkey Forest, The Yoga Barn is perfectly close to local shops, cafes, and a buzzing community.

The one-week pass cost us $30 and allowed us to go to any, and however many, of the typical 10 different classes offered every day.

From vinyasa flow, salsa dance, power yoga, pilates, to fly high yoga (a new-er style of aerial yoga that started in 2012 right here in Ubud), we had plenty of options.

And that was the beginning of our yoga obsession.

In the US, I had done “hot yoga” plenty of times with friends, but it was for the sole purpose of getting a good workout in.

But here, it feels as if the whole mental and physical aspect of yoga is far more meaningful.

Maybe I was doing yoga in the US all wrong, or maybe I wasn’t finding the right teachers for me, but at the Yoga Barn I finally realized what the yoga ‘hype’ is all about.

Rather than just going for a great workout, going to yoga classes everyday at the Yoga Barn gave Matt and I something to look forward to, and a place where we could free our minds from any anxiety or protruding thoughts.

Following our 1 week class pass, we immediately bought a 1 month unlimited pass, which cost us USD $70.

In our month-long membership, we tried so many different classes, made friends, connected with our bodies, became stronger and more mindful, and found teachers that pushed us to do things we never knew imaginable.

I even dragged Matt to a salsa dance class, which was hilarious, but sadly he refused to ever go to another.

Lessons Learned

So, what did we learn from all of this?

Many things, but most importantly, the importance of having daily practice.

As a very anxious person, I have always found it hard (actually, impossible) to shut my mind off and focus on being present.

It was never something that I was able to do, but something I wanted so badly.

For the first couple of weeks in yoga, I was literally unable to even keep my eyes closed during short meditations at the start and end of class.

I would look around, fidget with my hands, think about that TV show I was watching the night before, and let my mind wonder about the most random things.

But finally, with more practice, I was able to close my eyes and focus on my breath for even just 10 minutes… something I don’t think I’ve ever done in my whole life.

Yoga, for me, isn’t about being able to do the craziest poses – it’s about taking at least an hour of my day to focus on myself.

I am so proud of myself, and of Matt, for our journey so far becoming ‘yogis’.

I am proud of the lessons we’ve learned, and most importantly, the value that we place on having daily practice to improve ourselves, both mentally and physically.

How You Can Become A Yogi

So, if you are interested in growing, whether that be in a spiritual, physical, or emotional sense, I highly recommend giving yoga a try.

And good news- the Yoga Barn Bali actually offers online memberships, for an incredibly low price.
